The Science of Computer Ergonomics

Today the computer workplace is a very essential part of the home, and it’s important that you must clean it daily and arrange it so that you will boost your productivity in using your computer. Computer ergonomics is the science of doing so – making your body comfortable in respect to the computer environment.

This has become so important in recent times given that there have been lots of cases of health risks associated with using the computer for prolonged periods of time. In truth, prolonged computer use is something that we cannot avoid, especially if we work through our computers or if we connect with our loved ones online via social networks. What we can do to reduce health problems, therefore, is to fully implement healthy computer use, doing the little things that can promote bodily comfort as well as increased performance.

The most common outcome of poor computer practice is Repetitive Stress Injury, which are ailments that naturally occur after doing repetitive tasks on your PC which first leads to a minor body strain and then to a hazardous injury. The most common kinds of RSI are Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Bursitis and Tendinitis.

Of the three, Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most dominant injury, as it involves the wrists, which we constantly use for our mouse and keyboard. It’s a serious case wherein the median nerve of your hand is squeezed at your wrist due to constant abrasive use of the mouse. It often is accompanied by excruciating pain which makes it difficult for a person to do the simplest of tasks concerning the hand, such as moving a mouse or typing.

To prevent such injuries to happen to you, you are advised to follow these simple Computer Ergonomics principles to make your computer environment safer for your body:

1) Your working environment should be ergonomically designed, especially your chair, your keyboard, and your monitor. Always test your products for comfort before you purchase them.

2) Always use your keyboard more often than your mouse. A way to do that is to memorize shortcuts which can help you to work faster since you will not waste time navigating menus anymore.

3) Put your keyboard close to your body.

4) Your wrists must be straight and flat over the keyboard. The mouse should also fit comfortably in your hand.
