What to Do When You Spill Liquid All Over Your Laptop Keyboard

Laptop keyboards are definitely the most difficult keyboards to repair or fix. Firstly they are directly embedded to the laptop, and they are not a separate entity, so once it is damaged, you are essentially compromising the entire laptop itself. Second, while there are replacement parts for laptop keyboards they are twice more expensive than regular keyboards and are more difficult to find – it’s even possible that you will need to get help directly from your manufacturer for a replacement.

Therefore, it is best advice to maintain your laptop and keep it from becoming damaged, lest you want to contact laptop repair experts for problems that you could have averted if you’ve taken precaution. However, what if an accident happens to your laptop, such as an accidental spillage? It should interest you that most laptop owners encounter some kind of spillage problems during the course of the laptop’s lifetime.

Here are some tips that you must remember to always follow in case a spillage occurs in your laptop:

1) Do not panic. You can still save your laptop from further damage. Think, relax and prevent any further contact with water or any other liquid. Turn off the machine immediately without fail and question, and whatever you do, don’t turn it back on until the spill has certainly dried off.

2) Do not use a hairdryer in drying out a water spill. This may quicken the drying process but trust me, you won’t like to type on a melted keyboard, would you?

3) Never turn the laptop upside down, and if you can afford it, never turn a laptop to its side. If you do think it’s better to tilt the machine on the side, then tilt on the side where the CD-ROM is located, as there are lesser components located on that side.

4) After letting it to dry naturally, survey the entire laptop to see if it has completely become dry. If you’re certain enough that it’s already dry, you can then boot it and by this time, you can remove the keyboard and access your laptop using an external keyboard to see if anything else has been affected.

Although these tips will work to some extent, it will only certainly work on water-related spills. With spillage of any other liquid (especially sticky ones such as coffee) your keyboard will most likely be rendered useless and you might be forced to buy a new one. And don’t do this yourself – you are advised to contact your manufacturer before replacing your keyboard.
